Readability & SEO Metrics
Readability & SEO Metrics scores every topic for how easy it is to read and how well it is set up for search engines, and averages the scores for each document. Use it to find topics that are hard to follow or unlikely to be found, and to see what to fix.

What is measured
- Readability: Flesch reading ease, character count, average paragraph length, sentence count, passive voice, transition words, and how evenly subheadings are spread.
- SEO: word count, meta description and its length, H1 and H2 headings, images and their alt text, title length, keyphrase in the title, meta description, slug, and subheadings, keyphrase density, and outbound and internal links.
For details on each score and how to improve it, see Readability and SEO.
Score a topic
- In the topic's Settings, enter a Keyphrase, the main search term the topic should rank for, and a description. The SEO keyphrase checks use these.
- Save the topic. Scores are calculated every time you save.
- Open the SEO or Readability tab in the panel on the right of the editor, or select Metrics in the topic's more menu for a full-page view.
While the SEO or Readability panel is open, the topic tree shows each topic's score status.
See a document's averages
Open the document and select More actions > Analytics > Quality Metrics. The averages are updated as topics are saved, so they can trail your most recent save.
Things to know
- Topics are scored only when they are saved with the addon installed. Topics you haven't saved since installing show "Metrics are not calculated for this topic." Save them to calculate their scores.
- Page topics aren't scored.
- Scores are visible in the editor only. Readers never see them.
If you uninstall it
Topics are no longer scored, and the score panels are hidden. Scores calculated before are kept, and they show again if you install the addon again. They refresh as topics are saved.
